Conventional
Conventional water heaters are the most commonly used in households. It consists of a tank that holds between 30 and 80 gallons of water, which is kept constantly hot. With this tank, you only have to wait for the water to travel from the water heater to the tap to get hot water.
They are less energy-efficient than some others, because it takes a lot to keep a tank of water hot all the time, but they are great for utilizing multiple household uses simultaneously.
Tankless
Tankless water heaters are becoming more common because of the potential for large energy savings. Instead of keeping a tank of water always hot, it heats only when you need it to, so you only pay for the water you use and nothing more.
There are a few disadvantages to a tankless system, however. They are small and so you would need more than one to cover multiple uses at once – like taking a shower while the washer was running, and they cost more than a conventional tank. They do last almost double the time of a conventional heater, though.
Electric and Solar
Both electric and solar water heaters take energy from the environment—heat and sunlight—to heat a tank of water. These tanks can be up to three times more efficient than other types of heater. They are more expensive than other types, and must be installed in specific areas of your home in order to perform at their best.
